If the Sun Will Shine, The Honey Dew Drops' debut record, was just released May 2009. Recorded live and mixed in a 1920’s barn, the record means to pay homage to their live performances - full of the same energy and emotion the Honey Dewdrops bring to the stage. Local sound engineer, Abel Okugawa, mastered If the Sun Will Shine right here at Monkeyclaus in Nelson County, VA. A collection of songs written over the past two years, it features material that comes straight from the heart. Of eleven original tunes, some of which are award winners, and a few landed Laura and Kagey plane tickets to St. Paul, Minnesota where they appeared on A Prairie Home Companion’s “People in their Twenties Talent Show” and won first place in March 2008.

The Honey Dewdrops are headed out on the road this summer traveling west to California and playing at all points in between. They’re looking forward to joining up with Anne and Pete Sibley, winners of A Prairie Home Companion’s 2009 talent show in their great state of Wyoming for a set or two toward the end of the summer.

Check out this collage of photos from our relaxing and enjoyable July Monkey Session with The Honey Dew Drops.

These two wonderful musicians majestically settled into Monkeyclaus quite comfortable. Setting up their zone in the Live Room , they began the music making process with a few home made dehydrated sour cherries picked from Peter's cherry tree outside the studio. They cut 7 tracks and then continued the session in the bus where they were interviewed in depth and out of inspiration. Soon the recordings, interview and multi media slice of the creative process for The Honey Dew Drops will be ready to enjoy online .

The Art of Being Heavy: Horsefang

Horsefang is epic instrumental Metal from Charlottesville, VA. "The 'Fang" recorded their first EP at Monkeyclaus last year. It is a gnarly Metal ripper from start to finish. This past weekend they began to lay down the tracks for their follow up release. The raw tracks from this first session are entirely mammoth and crushing. Drummer Jarrod Hood's new DDrums "Bonham style" acrylic kit makes all the difference. Also the co-engineering of Bruce Falkinburg with studio stalwart Abel Okugawa. The tone crafting of the new Horsefang sound is brilliant. Articulate and monstrous drums meld with bigger bass tones and fiercer guitars, still with an element of warmth and breath. The new songs are more expansive, while still complex, mathy and galloping forward. Horsefang is a sound worth submitting to; a face melting brand of fantasy Metal fit for children and adults. We love it! They will be in the studio, especially on weekends, for the next months. We can't wait to debut their new sounds on our site and sell their new masterpiece. Trees On Fire Recording More Awesome Music

Yes, the infamous Trees On Fire are back at it again. It's been a pleasure to work with them and capture their souls to Pro Tools at 88.2khz/24bit. I strongly suggest you get interested. Check out these pictures from the studio sessions.

And to top it all off, Blake's uncle and his daughter opened up a juice shop with fresh mangoes, peaches, and pineapples and more right out back!

Finger Painters: Local Music Makers

Check out some local talent. The Finger Painters rock and let the natural bleed do the trick. That is to say, the bleed between amps, mics, drums, Rhodes, speakers, and energy. It all flows directly through our colorful Van den Hul signal path being organized into 88.2khz/24bit audio packets. Magic was in the air, and now it's on the hard drive.

Horsefang: Raw and Dirty

Serious effort goes into making Horsefang's heavy-as-lead music. I believe they tune down to the key of Hell itself. These sessions are all about capturing the tones and sweat from the players and leaving it as raw as possible, so you can feel and taste the riffs. How many riffs? No one really knows. You'll have to count them yourself.

Recording Birdlips is amazing -- vintage mics (Lomo,Sony,Electrovoice) and technique down to the circa 1950 Western Electric wires. Reverbs of springs, plates and space echo tape delay. Multi instrumentalist and mastermind Cliff Usher is making a killer album. You will definitely want to get a copy of this record when it's released; we are in the final mixing stages now.
