Peter & The Wolf’s Soundtrack To Adventure

Explore Monkeyclaus

What sounds like adventure? Peter and the Wolf, that's what. What is the soundtrack to the adventure? Maybe drunken sailors, maybe wind and chains, maybe kids who fled the Country, or, maybe maps with last-minute checkpoints and hoodies. Austin, Texas-based Peter & the Wolf is the fairly new musical project fronted by Red Hunter, an American Rocker with Hungarian gypsy heritage. "People have a need for adventure," he states.

Peter and the Wolf is equally as likely to perform in non-traditional places such as graveyards, under bridges or highway overpasses, beaches on islands reachable only by canoe, or burned-down houses. Secret shows only promoted by word-of-mouth. They also may perform in more traditional rock and roll venues.

Sometimes Peter & The Wolf is as many as 20 members playing live. Local friends (site-specific) and musicians comprise a divine cacophonous orchestra with Red Hunter as maestro on vocals and acoustic guitar with the orchestra forming a massive rhythm section. He also performs solo with an acoustic guitar during which he lives out of his Toyota Corolla with Texas plates.

Red Hunter explains, "I book the tours myself and live in my car during that time, so it doesn't really feel like a tour. It's just life. Lots and lots of friends support me, but, at the end of the day, it's just me out there on the road, trying to bring the music to the people."

Currently, Peter & The Wolf is on tour from August 21 through September 4, 2006, vis-a-vis the Intercoastal Waterway, on a sailboat. Yes, a sailboat, as in Max in "Where The Wild Things Are". And you know that is awesome. Stops in Nashville, Louisville, Knoxville, Atlanta and Memphis are all part of the nautical mile. Things like "polypropylene Bermuda shorts" and "an elk horn" matter now. All for intimacy, gothic folk, or even simply "weirdos and crazies".

Journalist Michael Koshkin describes Red Hunter, "When I met him, he was wearing an eyepatch. He didn't explain it. He'd driven from New Orleans to Brooklyn on Adderall and truckstop speed and back to Austin on a whim that a whiskey-stained couch was available for a few nights. He never left. Instead he found a little loft with a spiral staircase, began recording obsessively, and to this day, has not gotten one piece of furniture. He is an insomniac, the founder of Whiskey and Apples Records. He rarely answers the phone....or leaves his house. He doesn't wear the eyepatch anymore, but his right eye still quivers when you mention Los Angeles."

Red Hunter's label is Whiskey and Apples Records. And it's all hand-decorated with owls stamped in red ink. Red Hunter is a wise man. He recently stated, "It's like the Tao says, 'Have in your hold the great image and the empire will come to you.'"

Well right the fuck on.
