I recently stumbled upon The Garage while it was open and running with music and art blaring out into the night. I think it is the coolest little spot in Charlottesville yet. Tiny because the actual size is about the size of one of the JPJ Arena's subwoofers . In the line of underground music venues like the long lived and lost , Pudhouse, The Garage is a seemingly Free music and art venue that is host to some most interesting original works coming out of C'ville life today.

Long live tiny music venues.

The Garage is an art space/concert venue/amateur film theater/
impromptu studio/potluck dining hall/etc located on 1st Street across from Lee Park in Charlottesville, Virginia.

On most Friday nights, you can find the Garage’s door wide open as we enjoy art openings/viewings of monthly exhibitions or concerts by local and regional bands that bring together large crowds in the stadium seating (aka: on the hill of the park) across the street. We’re also known to host an occasional film screening, dance party, art performance, potluck, or other creative gathering as requested (or hosted) by a community member.

Here at the Garage we value community, creativity, collaboration, and accessibility. We love the paradox of the Garage’s intimacy and yet strange publicness.

We are interested in what it means to be creating and facilitating art in a “public yet private” context. We are not exactly sure where the Garage is located within those realms, but we are inquisitively exploring the topic through various art projects and collaborative conversations.

You can get in touch with the Garage by contacting:

Soundville, the latest ad campaign from Sony, is less of a traditional commercial and more of an acoustic art experiment. Juan Cabral of London-based ad firm Fallon transformed the sleepy Icelandic village of Seydisfjordur into quite possibly the world's largest sound system, including, amidst what appear to be hundreds of tweeters (the speaker kind) and woofers, a 20-foot tower of speakers. For three days, nonstop music -- from dance to folk to ambient -- pulsated through the town as Cabral's film crew recorded the residents' reactions. Since the town has a population of only 400 in winter and almost no traffic, Cabral (who also helmed a beautiful Bravia bouncing ball spot) was able "to create a pure sound experience" that powerfully reverberates off the mountains and fjords.Soundville, the latest ad campaign from Sony, is less of a traditional commercial and more of an acoustic art experiment.

Kohoutek's second studio album and second vinyl pressing, Lossless Loss, was officially released last night, and we have them in our hands. Recorded two years ago in Virginia at Monkeyclaus Studio, and completed in May 2008, we finally found a wonderful and supportive home in Prophase Records (who also releases Yahowha 13, Acid Mothers Temple, Plastic Crimewave Sound, and soon, the debut of VA's own Dark Sea Dream).

Lossless Loss, the second studio album from Mid-Atlantic improv collective Kohoutek, covers most of the dynamic stylistic range Kohoutek is known for: abstract and textural sound, atmospheric rock, harsh noise freakouts, clattering percussion, guitar heroics, and alien electronics congealing to form a multihued psychedelic extravaganza. Recorded deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia in September 2007, the five members embarked on a psilocybic twilight journey, and this 44-minute aural excursion is the result. No overdubs and minimal editing create an experience as close as possible to a Kohoutek performance. With longtime core members Scott Verrastro (percussion, flute), Craig Garrett (bass) and Scott Allison (electronics) augmented by Vic Salazar (electric guitar) and Damian Languell (vocals, harmonica, clarinet, didgeridoo, Space Echo), Kohoutek forge their own path in the improv universe, and Lossless Loss is another burning fragment of this fleeting sonic comet.

Check out this new seemingly controversial music from the band BEAK>. BEAK> were formed in January 2009 by three Bristol musicians, Billy Fuller, Matt Williams and Geoff Barrow (Geoff Barrow , who was/is a staple in the band Portishead, my favorite). This is much more indy rock sounding but still cool, will this type of music survive today ? If they are ever in the USA Monkeyclaus would love to host a Monkey Session with them.

The band have very strict guidelines governing the recording and writing process of their work. The music was recorded live in one room with no overdubs or repair, only using edits to create arrangements. All tracks were written over a twelve-day session in SOA Studios, Bristol. The album is to be released on the 19th of october 2009 on Invada Records Europe and ipecac in North America.

A limited edition box set version of the album will be available from September direct from the Invada website. Inside a specially designed black Beak> box will be a CD version of the album, a limited edition CD EP, 12" vinyl with 2 bonus tracks and a T Shirt. You can pre- order from this link:

The mission is simple. The vision is universal. The travel will be medicine.

With the gift and talents Creator has given us, we will embark on a journey throughout Turtle Island to highlight and help the creation of peace that’s already formulating amongst our young brothers and sisters. Through music, poetry, singing, M.C.ing and dialog we will help raise the consciousness and offer inspiration to the movers of those communities.

The short term objective is to know that everyone of us is taking responsibility for the healing of ourselves, our families, and our communities; through determination, respect, love for life, dialog, creativity and remembering to live as one, once again.

The long term objective is a generation of intelligent coherent spiritual human beings–always remembering their responsibility to our Mother Earth and the respect for all other living beings.

With this vision we will continue to live and evolve to where we came from.
